Department of Gynecology

The department was opened in 1971 after three years of the foundation of Basra Medical College. The department was located within the old site of the college at Bab-Al-Zubair. The department merged, at the start, with the department of surgery.
The first head of the department was Dr. Fawzia Al- Shamma (MRCOG) followed by Dr. Raja Al- Tekretti (MRCOG) who runs the department till November 1983.
In 1980, the department was moved to its new site at Basra Teaching Hospital.
From 1984, professor Nather Fatihalla (MRCOG), served in the department, as the head of the department, till September 1994. In his era, the department established the postgraduate studies. He was the director of Basra postgraduate centre in obstetrics & gynaecology, training the postgraduate students for the Arabian & Iraqi
Board Degree .in 1993, the department established the higher Diploma Degree in obstetrics & gynaecology.
In October 1994, a new head of the department assistant professor Dr Fouad Al-Dahhan( MRCOG) who is still serving in the department till the time of writing
this prospectus .The department has a national reputation in the undergraduate & postgraduate studies .In 1999 , the department achieved the first position in the final examination of the six year students among the obstetrics & gynaecological departments nationwide .
Most of the members of the academic staff are graduated from the same college,
Aims of the Department :
The aims of the placement include:
To familiarize students with the concept of providing a good standard of practice and care for their patients. This includes professional competence, good relationships with patients and observance of ethical obligations.
To enable the student to acquire skills relevant to Obstetrics and Gynaecology to make a clinical assessment of a problem, and develop a plan of care in its widest sense. This will involve seeing patients with a range of emergency and non emergency problems related to this module, as summarized below, and will also involve the development of both written and oral presentation skills.
Aims of Clinical Teaching ;
The clinical placement which comprises the main body of the teaching is itself 10 weeks long , and will be spent attached to clinical teams Basrah maternity hospital . The week immediately preceding these 5 weeks will be spent in Basrah Medical in the College , and will be devoted to preparation for the module, including lectures and instructions / demonstration of practical skills. The week immediately following the clinical placement will be used for consolidation, EMQ/data interpretation mock exams and a clinical OSCE for the sixth year . Please note that the marks for the clinical OSCE will contribute to final mark.
For the fifth year the clinical teaching is done out-patient Department in the same . hospital on patients referred to the department from medicals centers in Basrah . The teaching include short history taken and examination , This module last for three weeks .
Clinical skill
Clinical skill lab beside teaching and clinical examination is made on real patients and the rest of clinical teaching made module in the clinical sill lab .

· Manage Student life-cycle in learning obstetrics & Gynaecology from the fourth year to graduation to ensure a coherent and seamless student experience .

· Provide a top-level support for research and Basra`s Graduate medical college including co-ordination with other college departments & support academic planning for the college.
· To ensure that the program of study provide students with a thorough grounding in the subject to enhance their prospects in their future careers.

There are around 10-15 postgraduate students for the degree of the Iraqi or the Arabian board. Annual accepted students for training are six students, who trained under the supervision of five eligible members in the department.
Diploma courses start in November each year .The number of applicants increased from 4 students to 10 students in this year.
From 2004, diploma’s study years became two in stead of one year.
Terms and dates are available on request by the applicants.

DEPARTMENT FUTURE VISION
The department is committed to enhancing advanced teaching technology and student learning experience.
· The plan is to improve further the quality of the student's experience at the extent to which we create employable graduates.
· To ensure that the students learning experience is enriched by the department commitment to being a research –led department.
· Staff development in the field of subspecialties, like reproductive medicine, medical genetic, fetal medicine and gynaecological oncology.
· Communication with our community in creation of safe motherhood and screening program for common gynaecological malignancies.
· Finding guidelines for common obstetrical and gynaecological problems.
· Improve antenatal diagnostic program by arranging courses and equipments for early diagnosis of obstetrical problems.
· Researches will be directed to epidemiological studies to find out incidences of common gynaecological and obstetrical problems.
· The department is committed to publish leaflets directed to the public explaining in a simple language about common problem in the field of specialty.
· Gynecological and obstetrical text will be published to help the students to understand the syllabus.
· Our commitment is to improve other similar young departments' performance in the southern medical colleges.
· Department web-site will include all the activities and research works.
· Regular courses in the department's specialty to enhance CME.

THE POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

FACILITIES
The department has occupied, for the purpose of clinical training, Basra
Maternity and Child Hospital and Port General Hospital.
Postgraduate students enjoy excellent facilities and accommodation.
The department has its own teaching facilities. Computers facilities are also provided by the computers department at the college building.
The postgraduates groups run seminars and case presentation, in addition to daily meetings and journal clubs.
Perinatal mortality meeting are held with collaboration of the department of paediatrics.

THE UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES
The department objectives are:
1. Training: The students are trained on the antenatal care services and in counselling a pregnant patient, and how to select cases for hospital referral.
2. Prepare the student to be able to conduct a normal vaginal delivery and to diagnose obstructed labour following the partogram as a diagnostic alert in labour management.
3. The student is also trained to deal with the first aid in obstetric and gynaecological patients.
4. .The student should learn to diagnose the common gynaecological diseases and their management and to select the cases which need referral to special centres.
5. Training is also including the supervision of doctor in the primary health centre, and to work as a house officer in the departments of obstetrics and gynaecology.
6. The student should be able by the end of the course to deal with infertile couple and gives advice in this matter.
7. He should be able to advice the patients in the family planning methods.
8. With the collaboration with other departments in the college in preparing students in the line of the general objectives suggested by the third congress of the ministry of higher education in 1987.
TRAINING
Fourth Year: The students are trained on antenatal care .The are trained in the antenatal wards & labour ward in Basra Maternity & child Hospital.
By the end of the training session which last about 10 week, they should be able to differentiate between the normal & abnormal pregnancies .First aid in obstetrics is part of their training.
Fifth Year :In the fifth year the students are trained in the out-patient department at both Basra Maternity Hospital & Port General Hospital, their training last for three weeks during which the should be able to take a short history from the patients attending the out-patient department .Common gynaecological conditions are presented by the tutor in charge of their training .
Sixth Year : The students are trained to conduct a normal vaginal delivery and should be able to assist in assisted vaginal delivery and in suturing an episiotomy .
Training in obstetric & gynaecological wards last for 10 weeks. Out-patient training last for one week & one week in the ultrasound scan unite.
The students are divided in small groups to work in the labour ward, causality department & the operating theatre.
Seminars sessions are held in either hospital weekly in different subjects of interest.
Case presentation is practice daily by the groups with their tutors.
Scenarios are introduced in the clinical teaching in year 2005-2006. MOET courses are use in these scenarios.

There is a clinical examination for the students by the end of their training.
For the six year, in their final examination, anther clinical examination is held in addition to the oral examination.
For both, fifth & fourth year students a written mid year examination is held in January. The final written examination for the three years are held in June &those who fail this examination they are able to sit again in September (for the fifth & the fourth years) .The six year students who fail in their first trail are able to sit again in December of the same year .They should repeat all parts of the examination

Daily assessment of the students in their clinical session is part of their clinical mark.
The written examination is including a variety of multiple choice questions, true & false & essay questions which include clinical problems and both short & long essay questions.

The department line of research, in the field of safe motherhood, like birthing
Induction of labour, high risk pregnancies; in addition to various clinical researches,
following the lines of research suggested by the ministry of health.

d- Gynaecological endoscopies.
For the future, the policy of the department is to adobe “Safe Motherhood” in their line of research.
