1) The department was founded in 1970.
2) The head of the department at the present time is Prof. Dr. Ali Raheem Hashim.
3) The teaching staff of the department is 23 , qualified with highest degree in general medicine , other medical sub specialties , dermatology and psychiatry.
4) The department includes 3 sections : internal medicine, dermatology and psychiatry.
5) The teaching staff of the department is sharing in the teaching programme by giving lectures, and training of medical students in general medicine , dermatology and psychiatry.
6) The department is also responsible for the training of post graduate students of the Iraqi and Arabic board in general medicine and dermatology. The graduated students exceeding now 45 in medicine and 8 in dermatology.
7) The teaching staff of the department is sharing also in treating patients in medical, dermatology and psychiatry clinics in addition to their active participation in the relevant medical health care of the main hospitals of Basrah province`s center

The department aim to prepare a graduating doctor able to diagnose and treat diseases and emergencies in the field of internal medicine, dermatology and psychiatry .

The vision of the department of medicine is to be a recognized and distinguished unit in the field of internal medicine, Dermatology and psychiatry in Basrah – Iraq , and abroad by providing an excellent teaching and training for the medical under graduate and post graduate students who will actively share in improving the health of the community we serve, to reach a distinguished level of health and management services through department members who are working in all hospitals of Basrah centre.
Mission :
The mission of the department is to graduate, in integrative manner with other departments , doctors who are remarkably efficient and safe and to maintain a distinguished creative researches that try to solve mainly local medical problems.
It also encourages community orientation by identifying health problems and risk factors that could contribute at maintaing a distinguished level of health services .The department also aims at enduring a comprehensive continuous medical education program. In addition ; the members of the department are sharing actively in the treatment of patients in the main hospital of Basrah centre,and participate in all health committees of Basrah health directorate to affair their services to Basrah citizens. In order to achieve a high standard health services in Basrah particular and in Iraq as a whole.

Clinical training :
Third year : The training course consist of 60 hours , given in an average of 2 hours /
Weekly for 30 weeks . The student were taught how to take history.
Fourth year : Training course is 80 hours , 8 hours / weekly delivered in 2 hours / for
4 days / weekly . The student were taught the clinical examination and
clinical skill in medical ward , and lab. of clinical skill of the college.
Fifth year : Medicine - The students are divided in groups the training course last for
30 hours for each group, usually deliver in an average of 2 hours/
Days for 5 days/ weekly.
The students are trained in the medical clinics of the main teaching
hospital of Basrah centre . At the end of the course , the students
are subjected to clinical exam., and how to deal with patients in
out patient clinic.
Dermatology and Psychiatry - as above for general medicine.
Sixth Year : The students are divided into 3 groups , training in medical ward of the 3
teaching hospital in an average of 10 hour daily / 10 weeks.
The students are trained on clinical examination , case presentation and how
to make minor interferences . They are also shown how to do ECG , spinal
Tap, I V. fluid , they should gives at the end of the course three case
history reports , in addition, they discuss with their teaching staff common
medical problems as seminars , delivered weekly at Sunday. They attend
all clinical and scientific activities of the medical department . At the end of
the course students are subjected to clinical examination consisting of two

At the end of the fourth year , there is a final examination ( national consisting of two

Some of the department's members ( professional ) share actively in the examination
committees.
In addition , Out members usually involve in supervising post graduate MSc/ Ph.D
in college of medicine and other colleges of the university .
till now the number of post graduating that successfully qualified Arabic board and
